Transportation to Thailand

 

 

There are a couple of ways to get to Thailand, depending on where you are from. The common method is to fly in, especially if you are residing in far way places such as the United States or Europe.

 

By air:

 

There are many major airlines that fly into Thailand. The main gateway is usually Bangkok but certain airlines may also call at Phuket, Chiang Mai; Chiang Rai; Hatyai; and Ubon Ratchatani.

 

There is a 500 baht departure tax per person and is payable upon departure at the machines or the counter at the airport.

 

 


How to go to Phuket?

 

 

You could fly in directly to Phuket International Airport via international hubs such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong. Alternatively if you fly into Bangkok, you could take the domestic flights to Phuket airport.  There are daily flights available and you could choose the timing which fits your schedule.

  • Bangkok Airways
  • Air Asia
  • One to Go by Orient Thai
  • Destination Air

 

From the airport:

 

You could take a variety of transportation to reach your destination:

 

Pickup by resorts / hotels – if you have booked a resort or hotel, usually they would offer pickups. But do check with them on the charges, if any.

 

Taxis – To commute between the city and the airport, the fare might range from 400 baht to 600 baht, depending on your final destination.

 

Minivans – The charges vary from 80 baht to 120 baht per person.

 

Shuttles – Hourly shuttles are available, offered by Phuket Limousines.

 

By car:

 

If you are self-driving, you could pick up your car at the airport and drive down to Phuket. The whole journey is approximately 12 hours. You could check with the car rental company on the exact directions or take the following route: Take Highway No.4 (Phetchakasem Road) through Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Phang-nga Provinces, then cross the Thep Krasattri Bridge or Sarasin Bridge to Phuket Island.

 

By Bus:

 

You could take buses from the Southern Bus Terminal in Bangkok to Phuket. The journey takes around 13 hours and you can opt for air-conditioned or non-air-conditioned buses.

 

Moving Within Phuket

 

 

 

 

You could opt to get around by renting a car, taking a tuk tuk or songthaeo, motorcycle taxis or taxis.

 

Charges are approximately and to be used as a reference only:

 

Songthaeo – Operated along Ranong Road to certain beaches. Rates are around 20 to 25 baht per person per trip.

 

Motorcycle taxis - Around 20 baht per person per trip within Phuket city.

 

Tuk Tuk – Around 20 baht around town but may cost 200 – 300 bahts to the beaches.Do negotiate the price beforehand prior to getting on board.

 

Boats – If you want to explore the islands, you may take a boat from the ports such as Rawai beach, Ao Chawlong or Ao Makham.
